Subject Selection
Stage 5 (Years 9 & 10)
At Muirfield, students study three electives each year in Stage 5. All electives are 100-hour courses that run for one year; with each elective being studied for two periods a week. Students select their Year 9 electives in Term 3 of Year 8 and their Year 10 electives in Term 3 of Year 9. It may be that students continue an elective for two years or they may select three new subjects for Year 10. This variety allows students to challenge themselves, to try new ways of learning and to extend their interests.
In Stage 5, students study the mandatory courses: English, Mathematics, Science, PDHPE, History and Geography. The Department of Education also mandates sport as part of the school program. Mandatory courses and sport form the majority of students’ timetables.
More information is provided at the Subject Information Evening.
Stage 6 (Years 11 & 12, Preliminary & HSC)
Muirfield offers a wide range of traditional academic, creative and vocational subjects to the HSC level. In making the choice of subjects, students are supported as they transition to Stage 6. Our school teaching and leadership team offers advice and guidance in the selection process and to support students as they plan for their post-school pathways. More information is provided at the Subject Information Evening and in individual meetings with students, parents and senior teaching staff.
