Encouraging debate and discussion in online learning

During the online learning period, teachers and students at Muirfield High School have maintained an active engagement in debate, discussion and critical thinking. This has been evident in Year 11 English Studies, where students have been studying topics of Australian citizenship and cultural identity.

Teachers have utilised multiple digital tools such as real-time polling and surveys using Google Forms and break-out rooms on Microsoft Teams, to promote lively debate and develop persuasive communication skills. Students have collaboratively posed questions and critiqued complex and controversial topics such as ‘Should the National Anthem be changed?’ ‘What is the Australian identity?’, and ‘What does Australia Day mean?’ 

Discussing questions of social and political importance encourages students to be active and involved participants in their own learning and society.
