Student opportunities and activities

Muirfield High School offers a range of activities in the classroom and exciting extra-curricular programs across the school for our students. These programs help students build new skills, make friends and explore new interests. Some of our extra-curricular groups run during lunch or after-school.

Academic extra-curricular programs
Our programs enhance classroom learning, foster critical thinking and allow students to deepen subject knowledge. In humanities & communication, we offer inter-school debating competitions; and host Write A Book in a Day, primary writing competition with Muirfield students as judges; and student Library Guardians. Academic competitions are run across mathematics, science, geography and history, with competitions such as the Big Science Competition and the National Science and Engineering Challenge. Technology and Applied Studies extra-curricular programs include after-school clubs in textiles and woodwork. Our ribbon winning Agriculture Team attend, and compete at, country shows and the Sydney Royal Easter Show, exhibiting animals and produce. Other practical programs include white card training and real industry experience, reinforcing the importance of responsibility and excellence in professional settings.
School sport, athletics and inter-school competitions
Every year, we have teams who are successful at state knock-out competitions, as well as at weekly zone competitions, coached by our teachers. Many of our students are selected for zone representative and regional teams. We support elite athletes who gain selection to state and Australian teams. Our inclusive weekly sports program supports the fitness and social skills development of all students.
Creative and performing arts groups and showcases
We offer a broad variety of creative and performing extra-curricular activities, including vocal group, our award winning school concert band, beginner, intermediate and advanced guitar groups, several dance troupes, drama club and art group. CAPA Week is a key event on our calendar with workshops and master classes led by professional performers and artists. The annual MADD Night at Riverside Theatre allows students to perform on a professional stage. SummerArts is our inclusive festival, celebrating the year's achievement in creative arts. Our students perform in, and provide stage crew, for state-wide showcases such as the NSW Public Schools Millennium Marching Band, Pulse Alive and Schools Spectacular and are members of Greater Western Sydney Public Schools Symphony Orchestra.
Student leadership
In diverse forums, students are able to develop leadership and communication skills; and contribute, and make a difference, to their community and school culture. Year 11 students are peer leaders for Year 7 students, providing guidance and support in the transition to high school. The Student Representative Council (SRC) acts as a formal, democratic body of elected students who amplify student voices, advocate for peer needs, and organise events. The Student Executive is made up of Year 12 student who foster leadership, serve as role models and represent the school at formal occasions. School Captains and Vice Captains lead the Student Executive.
