During Numeracy Week, our students engaged in a variety of mathematical challenges that not only tested their skills but also contributed to their cognitive development. Regular practice of maths problems plays a vital role in strengthening neural pathways in the brain, a process known as neuroplasticity. At Muirfield, we also want to continue our students’ outstanding achievement. In 2024, students in Years 7 to 9 outperformed statistically similar school groups (SSSG) and performed significantly above the state average in state-wide numeracy tests.
In Numeracy Week, every lesson for students in Years 7 to 9 started with a quick maths activity, designed to keep students engaged and improve their mathematical thinking. As students tackled different problems throughout the week, they reinforced their understanding of mathematical concepts, improved their problem-solving abilities, and built confidence in their skills.
We encourage our students to continue this momentum beyond Numeracy Week, as consistent practice is key to mastering, and progressing in, maths. Parents can play a crucial role in supporting their child's maths journey. Encouraging regular practice at home, whether through homework, online resources, or fun maths games, helps reinforce what they learn in school. Additionally, engaging in everyday activities that involve maths—like cooking, shopping, or budgeting—can make learning practical and relatable. Parent involvement and encouragement can significantly boost a child's confidence and enjoyment in maths. We have included a few mathematical problems in the gallery that parents may solve together with their child.
Here's to a future filled with mathematical exploration and success!
